Step-By-Step Suggestions for
installing the Quatech DSP-100 PCMCIA card for use with EFSview running on
Windows2000.
NOTES:
a) It is important to have the
Quatech CD “Communication Product Drivers and Manuals” available. This CD is
included in the EFSPC-LT-2 Kit.
b) Beware: There is more than
one version of DSP-100. Some do not run at high enough speed for the EFSview
application. The correct one is included in the EFSPC-LT-2 Kit.
c) The following steps may vary
slightly depending on the version of Windows2000 and service pack that you have
installed.
d) Should you experience
communications errors when running EFSview it may be that there is insufficient
computing resource available from your computer. This will largely depend on
the speed of the processor, the type of processor (e.g. only Celeron processors
with a clock speed exceeding 1gHz are likely to work successfully – use
Pentium) and the number of other programmes that are running concurrently with
EFSview. For example, some screensavers can absorb resource even when they are
apparently dormant. The running applications are normally shown in the tray of
your desktop. They can normally be closed-down by right-clicking on them or a
similar method.
e) EFSview versions 1.07 or
later are required to run with this card on Windows2000.
f) The hardware/software
combination of your PC may allow you to remove and re-insert the PCMCIA device
successfully while the PC is running. It is also possible that re-insertion may
cause a lock-up of the PC. If that is the case the PCMCIA card should be
re-inserted with the PC shut-down. It will then normally be recognised and run
OK when the PC is re-started.
STEPS:
1) Insert the Quatech
“Communication Product Drivers and Manuals” CD in to the CD drive. It will not
auto-run.
IMPORTANT: Do not connect the
serial cable to the counting machine until after step 17. If that is
inadvertently done you may experience random movements of the cursor during
installation. That can be quite disruptive to your computer.
2) Insert the Quatech DSP-100
PCMCIA card in to the appropriate slot of the computer. It is normally OK to
insert the card with the computer running, but if you in doubt close the
computer down first.
The card will only insert successfully in one orientation. The
larger connector should enter the computer first. The smaller connector should
then have the adapter lead inserted. This lead is included in the EFSPC-LT-2
Kit.
3) Windows2000 will detect the
presence of the new card and shortly afterward the HARDWARE WIZARD will appear.
Click NEXT
4) Select “SEARCH FOR A
SUITABLE DRIVER FOR MY DEVICE (RECOMMENDED)”
Click NEXT
5) Select “CD ROM DRIVES”
Click NEXT
6) You will see “THE WIZARD HAS
FOUND A DRIVER FOR THE FOLLOWING DEVICE -
QUATECH_INC_DUAL_RS-232_SERIAL_PORT_PC_CARD”
Click NEXT
7) The computer will then copy
the required files from the CD.
Click FINISH
8) The computer will then detect that this card has a second
communications channel and the HARDWARE WIZARD will appear again. Repeat steps
3,4,5,6,7 again. This time step 6 will say “THE WIZARD HAS FOUND THE FOLLOWING
DEVICE – QUATECH SERIAL PORT”
9) Having installed the drivers
for the card you now need to configure the card.
Click START – SETTINGS –
CONTROL PANEL
Double-click the SYSTEM icon.
Click the HARDWARE tab.
Click the DEVICE MANAGER
button.
10) Select “QUATECH MULTIPORT
SERIAL DEVICES”
Double-click it.
11) Select “QUATECH DSP-100
PCMCIA TWO-PORT RS-232 SERIAL ADAPTER”
Double-click it.
12) Select the ADVANCED tab.
Select x2 CLOCK MODE
Click OK.
13) Select PORTS(COM & LPT)
from DEVICE MANAGER
Double-click it.
Select the first “QUATECH
PCMCIA SERIAL PORT (COMx)” where x could be a number from 2 to 16. The
operating system selects this number automatically depending on the other
serial devices that are installed.
The installation process may
have allocated com ports 1,2,3 or 4. If
it has done so it is important to reallocate a port number that is higher than
4 to each card, E.G. 5 & 6 during step 14.
Double-click it.
14) Select the PORT SETTINGS
tab
Click the ADVANCED button.
If the com port number is 1,2,3
or 4 reallocate the com port to a number higher than 4 that is not already in
use.
(The maximum number is 16 with
EFSview version 1.09.000 onwards.)
It is not necessary for the two
ports to use adjacent numbers.
Make a note of the number. You
will need it when installing EFSview.
Slide the RECEIVE BUFFER
pointer left to the 8 position (second from the right).
The TRANSMITTER BUFFER setting
is not important.
Click OK.
15) The port settings should be
as follows:
BITS PER SECOND 115200
DATA BITS 8
PARITY NONE
STOP BITS 1
FLOW CONTROL NONE
(This is done mainly for
tidiness because EFSview adjusts them automatically when it runs.)
Click OK
16) Now select the second
“QUATECH PCMCIA SERIAL PORT (COMx)”.
Double-click it.
Repeat steps 14 & 15 for
this port.
17) Close DEVICE MANAGER,
SYSTEM PROPRTIES & CONTROL PANEL.
18) The driver installation is
now complete. The computer will need to be restarted before the card will
operate. If you have not installed the EFSview program you can do so before
restarting. You may also connect the
serial cables from the counting machine to the PCMCIA card using the special
adapter cable which is supplied in the kit.
Use the two values that you
have noted for the com ports when EFSview installation prompts you for a COM
number. E.G. com5 and com6.
Installation of EFSview is relatively simple process . Click here for instructions
